Alex Furman, Director of Development, University of Melbourne
The Director, Development oversees the strategy for University-wide fundraising across Australia and internationally through a range of programs that include principal and major gifts, gifts in wills (bequests and planned gifts), donor relations, and research and prospective donor management.
Alex Furman trained as a classical pianist in Australia and the UK. After an early professional career in music, he worked in arts management, public relations and marketing before moving into development and fundraising. He has held senior roles with Melbourne Festival, Murdoch Children’s Research Institute and the University of Melbourne. His areas of development practice have encompassed capital campaigns, direct marketing, major gifts, and corporate sponsorship. He is currently a Board Member of the Mietta Foundation, and a former member of Musica Viva, Australia’s national artistic advisory council and the Development Board of the Children’s Bioethics Centre at the Royal Children’s Hospital.
Nick Jaffer, President and CEO, Global Philanthropic Asia Pacific
Nick began his career in Canada, working with organisations including the Leukaemia Research Fund, Aga Khan Foundation and Alberta Lung Association. These led to his roles as Manager, Annual Giving and Senior Development Officer at the University of Alberta during its milestone $193million campaign – at the time the 3rd largest university campaign in Canadian history.
Nick moved to Australia in 2001 to become Director, Foundation & Alumni Relations at Curtin University (Perth) and in 2005 joined the University of Sydney as Director of Development where he directed the University-wide fundraising program, including several campaigns.
Under his guidance, Sydney University tripled its number of donors and grew fundraising revenues from $20 million to $75 million per year leading into the University’s current $750million Inspire Campaign.
He has received awards from the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), the Canadian Council for the Advancement of Education (CCAE) and the Alberta Association of Fund Raising Executives (AAFRE), and has presented at workshops/conferences in North America, Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia and New Zealand.

Shelagh Murray is a highly experienced facilitator of non-profit fundraising and her role in the University of Otago as Director of its Development and Alumni Relations Office demands a lot of her extensive skills. Ms Murray has developed and implemented successful fundraising and alumni relations strategies as Head of Alumni and Development at the University of Canterbury (for nine years) and in her subsequent five-year role as Executive Director of Development and the Foundation at Victoria University of Wellington.
