Please read a summary report (to the left) of the recent member survey conducted in partnership with Marts & Lundy. This survey sought to examine the ‘Impact of Recent Events on Development Programs, Staffing and Budget Decisions: Australia and New Zealand Schools’. As we emerge from COVID-19, many members will be briefing their Heads and Boards and currently considering 2021 goals and plans. This research report may provide some insight and guidance. The webinar was a valuable opportunity to further unpack the results, talk about how to use them and highlight implications for the challenging recessionary period ahead. We discussed the findings of the survey and answered questions that had arisen as a result of the feedback provided. |

Clare Pullar F.EdPlus, Senior Consultant and Principal, Marts & Lundy
Clare is Adjunct Professor in Practice in Philanthropy at the University of Queensland (UQ). She served as the inaugural Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Advancement) for the University from 2009 to 2016. Prior to UQ Clare served the University of Melbourne for 13 years – including 10 years as Director of Advancement with Trinity College. She also served three years at Melbourne Business School, where she established the School’s first endowed Chair and Scholarship program.
Clare has led the Australian sector through chairing the Go8 Chief Advancement Officers group, which has brought benchmarking in fundraising to the university sector. She has contributed to the development of policy in higher education and international education, and helped shape training courses in order to strengthen the talent pool for Australia and the region.
She is a Board member of the Australian Youth Orchestra and Janet Clarke Hall University of Melbourne. In October 2016, Clare received a Distinguished Alumni Award from LaTrobe University in recognition of her leadership in educational philanthropy.
Ann Badger F.EdPlus, Senior Consultant and Principal, Marts & Lundy
Ann is a recognised leader in advancement within Australia. She works with a range of clients in the education sector, in Australia and beyond, to build their fundraising capacity. In addition to over 20 years as a development professional, Ann worked as an educator for leading secondary and tertiary educational institutions in Melbourne for 17 years, which gives her deep insight of the needs and opportunities at play in the Australian education sector.
Prior to joining our firm in 2013, Ann was Director of Advancement at Ormond College, University of Melbourne, for eight years, and Director of Community Relations at Melbourne Grammar School for more than ten years.
Ann is a Past President of both Educate Plus VIC/TAS and Educate Plus Australasia Inc. and was the recipient of that organisation’s peak award in 2000. She is in demand as a conference leader, running workshops, seminars and making major presentations in Australia for Educate Plus and overseas for CASE — particularly on major gifts fundraising, running successful campaigns and bequest programs.
Dr Alan Watkinson F.EdPlus, Consultant, Marts & Lundy
Dr. Alan Watkinson has worked in education for his entire career and was Head of the English Faculty at Scotch College in Melbourne for 17 years.
Alan has been Director of Development and Advancement at Scotch College, Trinity College at the University of Melbourne and at the Melbourne Business School. In 2013, he was appointed as Director of Alumni and Advancement at La Trobe University where he built the team from 11 people to a total of 25. He became Chief Advancement Officer in June 2016 and in this role he worked closely with the Vice Chancellor in leading the Campaign for La Trobe – Make the Difference. The target for the University’s first-ever comprehensive campaign was $50 million over five years, a target which was exceeded within three years.
Alan is a former Chairman of Educate Plus and has presented widely on advancement issues throughout Australia and internationally for more than a decade. He has been a regular presenter at CASE conferences and has taught at the CASE Institute for educational fundraisers in Australia.
He has a particular interest in campaigns and major gifts, but also had deep involvement in the annual giving programs of his institutions, bequest programs and stewardship, as well as integrating alumni relations into a comprehensive advancement office.
Alan is a Fellow of Educate Plus, and in 2010 was the recipient of both the Trevor Wigney Award and the Peter Crook Award for services to educational advancement in Australasia.
Neil McWhannell JP GAICD, CEO, Educate Plus
Neil is the current CEO of Educate Plus. Prior to his appointment he held the position of the foundation CEO of HeartKids Australia.
At HeartKids, he transformed the organisation and was awarded the Equity Trustee CEO of the Year Award for first year achievers and Runner Up in the 2009 Australian Fund Raiser of the Year Awards. Neil was also the recipient of a Harvard business School minor scholarship. Neil initially comes from an educational background where he was Principal at some of the leading independent schools in Australasia.
Russell Davidson F.EdPlus, VIC/TAS Chapter President & Deputy Chair, Director of Development & Alumni Relations, Haileybury College
Russell commenced in his role at Haileybury, Australia’s largest independent School with over 4500 students, in 2008. Prior to his appointment, Russell was National Business Manager for leading childcare and events company, Camp Australia. Presently, Russell is responsible for implementing a diverse range of services, communication techniques, activities and opportunities for an assorted group of over 16000 members of the Old Haileyburians Association (OHA). The OHA is widely recognised as one of the leading alumni organisations in Australia.
In addition, Russell has overseen the Haileybury Foundation, the major fundraising platform for scholarships, building and library programs at the School.During the eight year existence of the Foundation, Russell has successfully implemented a strong Scholarship and donor recognition program as well as a Staff Giving and Class Giving campaigns. Russell comes from an educational background, having previously taught at Haileybury for 7 years with one of those years spent on exchange in Toronto, Canada.
